What level do I teach?
I welcome everybody from complete beginners who've never held a brush before, to intermediate painters who just want to hone their skills.
How many students are in each class?
There are up to 6 students ONLY at a time in my 'in-studio' classes which allows for a lot of one-to-one attention.
What do classes involve?
There's a complete demonstration at every class. This will give students an overall view of the process of painting 'wet-into-wet' or alla prima oils. Then students will either paint objects from life or use photographic landscape references under guidance. The aim is to finish a painting at each class.
Is there any outdoor work?
During the spring and summer months (and when the weather holds out!), we make occasional field trips to local spots. For more focussed outdoor trips, I organise them as weekend workshops.
Why should I choose this painting class instead of another?
I give no-nonsense tuition about all aspects of painting -from creation to how to build your artistic career. You'll receive my full attention and support as there are only ever small numbers in class. This is a friendly, encouraging and engaging environment. There's free tea/coffee and biscuits and a cosy stove lit!

Materials checklist
Bring boards or canvases of around 5"x7" or 7"x7". The aim of this class is to paint small and paint often.
For students, I recommend Winton Oils -good student quality paint, you can get them everywhere and the colours are consistent). If you're already dedicated to painting; always get Artist quality paints. You can read a more in-depth explanation here.

If you want to try the technique of making a warm, monochrome underpainting, you will need the following tubes of ACRYLIC paint, although these are NOT NECESSARY for the normal oils alla prima classes:
Terms and conditions
Signing up for a term of art classes is a 6 week commitment; classes not taken cannot be carried forward to a new term. Terms can not be split up or fees discounted for classes not taken.
When students are unable to make it to a class for whatever reason, I will always endeavour to let them catch up in another art class but only if a place is available.
If I am unable to hold the art class, the class will be made up so students will not be short.
Payment must be made at least 2 weeks before the term begins, in order that a replacement student can be arranged from the waiting list.
Payment matters can not be discussed in the studio; the studio is a sanctuary for art, painting and creativity.
Students should have the required painting materials for the class (please see above).

2. How to Get Here/Map My art studio is accessed by the laneway at the rear of 17 Aideen Avenue, Terenure, Dublin D6W Y635. It's a bit hidden (but it's a gem), I suggest you bring your mobile phone along and call 086 247 0737 if lost.

- Winton Cobalt Blue
- Winton Permanent Rose
- Winton Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue
- Winton Titanium White (or Titanium buff)
- Winton Burnt Umber
- Winton Ivory Black (failing Ivory Black, get Indigo or Paynes Grey).
- Sap green (or Viridian)
- Cadmium Yellow Deep
- Burnt Umber
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cadmium Red
- A Table box-easel. Such as this one. These are widely available in art shops.
- A flat wood painter's palette (rather than one of those white palettes with dips -they're more for watercolours).
- Solvent: Zest-it, (if you can get it -if not, get Sansodor). For cleaning brushes and diluting paint.
- Brushes -Synthetic short flat brights: 12 and 6. Also, a Round No. 1. I recommend the Create brand (you can buy a packet of 5 brushes for under €5 in Artmines, K&M Evans or Eason) and THESE are the ones.
- Rags
- If you like Liquin, bring that too. (Liquin is a quick-drying medium and glazing additive).
- Wear old clothes: painting can be a messy business!

- Warm Bright Yellow 513 (Sennelier)- OR - Pale Terracotta 437 (Winsor & Newton)
- Titanium White
